FAQs
What is scientific illustration?
Scientific illustration is a discipline in the service of scientific communication, which combines art with science to synthesize and present clear and objective visual scientific information, assisting scientists in their work of identifying, describing, classifying, and naming a species. Scientific illustration is, in most cases, a team effort—a scientific illustration results from collaboration between a scientist and an illustrator.
How does a collaboration with a scientific illustrator work?
Making a scientific illustration involves several steps: defining the purpose of the illustration, the target audience, the way of publication, the time available and the budget, the ways of making reference materials and relevant studies available to the illustrator for a good understanding of the subject to be illustrated, the delivery format of the final illustration.
Based on this information, the best solutions and techniques will be identified together to meet the requirements, as well as the number of corrections(that depend on the complexity of the illustrated subject). For the best possible results, open communication between the two parties is necessary.
Who owns the copyright of a (scientific) illustration? Who gets the original final illustration and the drafts? What other related rights does the illustrator have?
Copyright for a (scientific) illustration always belongs to the illustrator.
The client receives the right to reproduce the illustration under the terms agreed with the illustrator.
In most cases, the original final illustration and/or sketches remain with the illustrator.
The illustrator also has the moral right, related to copyright, to be recognized as the author of the illustration (by signature or other mentions) and to present his illustration in his work portfolio.
Is there a minimum cost for a (scientific) illustration?
Since each project is unique and depends on the complexity and time required, it is difficult to estimate a minimum cost/hour or project.
However, the average Romanian gross monthly salary can be used as a starting point for the minimum cost/hour.
Do you accept advertorials on your blog?
Because the blog has a very personal touch, I do not accept publishing advertorials written by other people. Second, out of respect for my readers, I don’t accept advertising for products or services I haven’t tried or don’t believe in. Thirdly, I do not agree to write on this blog, advertorials that have nothing to do with existing subject categories.
Otherwise, if you think you have ideas for collaboration that fit the content of this blog, I look forward to hearing from you.
Do you accept proposals to write articles/advertorials/content for other platforms?
Yes, I am open to such collaborations. You can find information about my favorite fields here, but I gladly accept other challenges.
